Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, reportedly offered to repurchase the Louvre’s stolen jewels from the recent heist and donate them to the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. The proposal, reported on October 21, 2025, suggests returning the looted items to a secure institution and leveraging them to showcase cultural collaboration between France and the UAE.

The Louvre robbery occurred on October 19, when thieves struck the Apollo Gallery, taking multiple pieces from imperial, restoration, Napoleon III, and Empress Eugénie collections; a crown was apparently recovered at the scene. Durov’s stated plan emphasizes that UAE museums are better protected against theft.

The idea has drawn mixed reactions, with critics arguing it distracts from pursuing the perpetrators, while supporters say it could transform a high-profile crime into a cross-border cultural initiative.
