Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has triggered debate after contrasting safety in Europe with that in Dubai amid rising regional tensions. In a post on X, Durov said he had to leave Dubai for Europe a week earlier and joked that he was now “missing the free fireworks from Iran” while “exposing myself to greater risk.” Citing Europe’s crime rates, he argued that Dubai remains “statistically safer even with missiles flying” and added that he “can’t wait to be back.” 

His remarks came just days after Iran launched missile and drone strikes targeting major Gulf cities, including Dubai, in retaliation for earlier military actions. The comment drew mixed reactions online, with some users and public figures, including Elon Musk, agreeing that the UAE is safer and better run than many European cities.
