Elon Musk responded with the single word “Wow” to a post by Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, regarding censorship requests on Telegram channels ahead of Moldova’s presidential election. 

Durov revealed that about a year ago, while in Paris, French intelligence agencies approached him through an intermediary with demands to censor several Telegram channels considered problematic by Moldovan authorities. Telegram reviewed the channels, removed those violating platform rules, but rejected the request to censor politically inconvenient channels, stressing the platform’s commitment to free speech and refusal to remove content for political reasons. 

Musk’s brief reaction highlighted surprise at the censorship attempt. Durov promised to remain vigilant against pressure to introduce censorship on Telegram and to expose such attempts publicly.
