Elon Musk’s X Launches Marketplace for Inactive Usernames, Inspired by Telegram

Elon Musk’s social platform X, formerly Twitter, has launched the X Handle Marketplace, allowing Premium subscribers to request and acquire inactive usernames. The service resembles Telegram’s Fragment platform, where rare nicknames are bought and sold.

Usernames are divided into free “Priority” handles — common word combinations or alphanumeric strings — and paid “Rare” handles, priced from $2,500 up to seven-figure amounts due to demand and uniqueness. Upon acquiring a new handle, the user’s old username is frozen and can revert back if the subscription ends.

X plans to introduce a paid redirect feature that will let users forward their old usernames to new ones. This marketplace aims to curb secondary market reselling and monetize the platform while enhancing username availability in a controlled, secure manner.
