EU Censorship in Politics and Social Media Compared by Durov

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has commented on newly released documents that, in his view, expose European Commission interference in electoral processes across several European countries. He reacted to materials published on the official X account of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, which released another batch of EU-related documents allegedly showing attempts to restrict freedom of speech in the United States in the name of enforcing the large-scale European Digital Services Act.

Durov drew a parallel between political interference and pressure on social media platforms, arguing that regulatory mechanisms designed to “protect” democracy are in fact used to shape public discourse and limit dissenting voices. By highlighting these disclosures, he again questioned the EU’s commitment to genuine free expression in both electoral politics and the online sphere.
