Legal Risks of Anonymous Donations to Telegram Channels Warned by Lawyer

A criminal defense lawyer has warned that donating anonymously to Telegram channels can pose serious legal risks. Telegram, a popular messaging app with personal channel management, is widely used for fundraising—ranging from charity to supporting bloggers and independent media.

However, the perceived anonymity of such donations via cryptocurrency, e-wallets, or online banking may be misleading. If a channel is linked to illegal activities—such as extremism, terrorism, or drug trafficking—donors can face criminal prosecution even if unaware of the misuse.

Under Russian law, extremism charges can lead to up to six years in prison, terrorism up to ten years, alongside severe penalties for money laundering and supporting banned organizations. Lawyer Mikhail Pavlovich Sazanov emphasizes that donating to anonymous wallets can be treated as criminal complicity, prompting investigators to question why ordinary individuals send money to unidentified accounts.
