Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed no surprise at France’s demand for Moldova to censor Telegram channels ahead of the presidential election. 

Zakharova criticized the West for its relentless efforts to undermine other countries, stating, “Who would doubt it? When the West decides to destroy another country, it acts without conscience in all areas.” The remarks come after Telegram founder Pavel Durov revealed that about a year ago, French intelligence requested assistance in censoring certain Telegram channels linked to Moldova’s election. Durov refused, emphasizing Telegram’s commitment to free speech. 

Zakharova’s statements highlight the ongoing geopolitical tension and the use of information control tactics in the context of Moldova’s elections. Moldova has also faced bomb threats at multiple polling stations during its parliamentary elections.
