Telegram founder Pavel Durov has publicly responded to Elon Musk regarding the etymological link between the words “slavery” and “Slavs.” This follows a post by Musk showcasing his AI chatbot Grok, which confirmed the term “slave” is historically connected to the Latin sclavus, originally meaning “Slav.”

Durov elaborated on X, stating the word derives from Old French, as Western Europeans enslaved many Slavs in the Middle Ages. He added that no Slavic nation has ever invaded Western Europe unprovoked, unlike the reverse.

This marks another public disagreement between the two tech figures, following previous discussions about integrating Grok into Telegram which affected the TON cryptocurrency.
