The New People party has spoken out against a potential ban of Telegram in Russia, declaring: “We are against blocking Telegram.” The party recalled that previous online platforms were blocked suddenly and retrospectively, when it was almost impossible to change anything, and insisted that this scenario must not be repeated with Telegram. 

They announced the launch of an app that allows any citizen to sign a petition against the blocking of the messenger, arguing this will demonstrate how many Russians want to keep using Telegram and prevent authorities from claiming the ban is “in the people’s interest.” In addition, party representative Vladislav Davankov proposed an open letter to Pavel Durov, urging him to open an official Telegram office in Russia. Meeting this formal legal requirement, they argue, would remove the main justification for a ban.
