Pavel Durov, Telegram’s founder, revealed that about a year ago, while stuck in Paris, he was approached through an intermediary by French intelligence requesting help to censor several Telegram channels at Moldova’s request ahead of its presidential elections.

After reviewing the channels flagged by French and Moldovan authorities, Telegram found some that violated platform rules and removed them. However, a second list contained mostly legitimate channels that only expressed political opinions unfavorable to the French and Moldovan governments.

Durov refused to comply with this political censorship request, emphasizing Telegram’s commitment to free speech and its refusal to remove content for political reasons. He pledged to continue exposing attempts to pressure Telegram into censorship, highlighting the platform’s dedication to protecting open communication.
