Pavel Durov Warns of a Looming Dystopian Future as Privacy Erodes Globally

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov issued a stark warning about the near future of the internet, citing an accelerating global erosion of privacy protections. Marking his 41st birthday, Durov voiced concern that his generation is “running out of time to save the free internet” built by earlier generations.

He highlighted troubling initiatives like the EU’s mass private message scanning, the UK’s digital identity system, and Australia’s online age verification rules as signs of a dystopian shift. Durov criticized governments for cracking down on online dissent: Germany penalizes critics of officials, the UK imprisons people for social media posts, and France investigates technology leaders defending privacy.

He described the rapid transformation of free information exchange into a “tool of ultimate control” and warned that his generation may be the last living in true digital freedom unless urgent action is taken.
