Russian users experienced widespread disruptions to Telegram and WhatsApp services overnight. The outages hit hardest in Tatarstan (32% of WhatsApp complaints) and Nizhny Novgorod (17% for both apps), with Samara, Saratov, and Ulyanovsk also affected. Users reported app failures and notification errors – some received alerts but couldn’t access chats.

Services were restored by July 1 morning. The incident fueled concerns that authorities may permanently block foreign messengers like Telegram, WhatsApp to promote domestic alternatives, leaving citizens without vital communication tools.
