A Russian state Duma deputy, Sergei Gavrilov, has suggested blocking Apple’s FaceTime service due to its increasing use in fraudulent activities. Scammers, having shifted to FaceTime after restrictions on other messaging apps, deceive users by falsely claiming their accounts were hacked. They persuade victims to share screens during calls, gaining access to banking codes and passwords.

The end-to-end encryption used by FaceTime also prevents security services from monitoring conversations, raising additional concerns. Earlier in August, Roskomnadzor—Russia’s media regulator—limited voice calls on WhatsApp and Telegram as part of a broader effort to combat crime through foreign platforms.
