Russian Operators Urged to Stop SMS Verification Codes for Telegram and WhatsApp

Russian mobile operators have reportedly been asked to stop sending verification codes via SMS for Telegram and WhatsApp. The codes are a required step when creating a new account or changing a phone number on an existing account. While some operators are still sending codes, this appears to be temporary.

In the same “Durov Code,” an instructional piece suggests Russian users adopt alternative steps: enable email verification, and initiate additional Telegram sessions on other devices, since verification codes would also arrive there. Another option is to transfer the account to a foreign, non-Russian number if available. The guidance reflects ongoing concerns about SMS-based verification in Russia and potential access issues with popular messaging apps.
