Scientists Decode Telegram’s Hidden Influence Structure Using Advanced Digital Fingerprinting

Researchers at Russia’s Higher School of Economics have developed a novel method to unravel the hidden influence structure within Telegram, one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms. By transforming chaotic message flows into a clear digital influence map, they capture the unique “digital fingerprint” of each channel based on five key parameters, including audience engagement, sentiment, and strategic network position.

Channels fall into four archetypes: major centers producing original news, bridges relaying information, niche topical hubs, and passive observers. Applied to real data, the method reveals complex information ecosystems invisible to the naked eye. For example, educational channels split into broad science aggregators and specialized military-focused communities, while official channels are clearly distinguished from alternative viewpoints, illustrating sharp polarization.

This analysis offers critical insights for intelligence agencies combating misinformation, marketers targeting key platforms, and users navigating Telegram’s multifaceted information landscape.
