A new Telegram-compatible instant messaging app named Telega has hit app stores, and it is being heavily promoted within Telegram itself. Telega claims seamless calling features and does not require a VPN to operate. It reportedly can bypass Roskomnadzor blocks on voice calls and offers parental controls to monitor a child’s account, along with a convenient “wall” feature to organize Telegram channels. 

The app also includes a built-in blacklist of Telegram channels, bots, and users that can be activated at any time. Verstka investigated whether Telega is connected to Pavel Durov, whether it remains unblocked, and whether it is safe to use. 

Telega is not Telegram, and Durov bears no responsibility for it. Telegram uses some open-source code and allows third-party developers to use its protocol to build alternate clients, with conditions to protect user privacy.
