Telegram Founder Durov Accuses Macron of Turning EU into a “Digital Gulag”

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of imposing online censorship, claiming Macron is “trying to silence online critics and turn the entire EU into a digital Gulag.”

In a statement posted on the U.S. social platform X, Durov sharply criticized the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which he called a tool for restricting free expression under the guise of regulation. He also noted that the U.S. had sanctioned former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, one of the DSA’s architects and a close ally of Macron.

Durov argued that Macron’s popularity is declining and that the French leader is attempting to suppress dissent through censorship mechanisms embedded in the DSA. The term “Gulag” refers to forced labor camps of the Soviet era.
