Telegram founder Pavel Durov has provided an update on his ongoing legal case in France, saying the criminal investigation has struggled to find any evidence of wrongdoing since his arrest in August 2024. Describing his arrest as “unprecedented,” Durov called holding a tech executive responsible for users’ independent actions “legally and logically absurd.”

He stressed that Telegram’s content moderation meets industry standards and the company complies with all legally binding French requests. Despite this, Durov must report to French authorities every 14 days without a scheduled appeal date, and he warned that the government’s actions have caused “irreparable” damage to France’s reputation as a free nation.

His arrest has sparked widespread condemnation from the crypto community, human rights groups, and free speech advocates, accusing France of pressuring Telegram to impose censorship. President Macron denied political motives, while Durov reaffirmed Telegram’s commitment to user privacy and refusal to create backdoors.
