Telegram Shadow Communities Survive Only Seven Months on Average

Research by Kaspersky experts shows that shadow communities in Telegram have an average lifespan of only seven months, based on analysis of more than 800 channels blocked between 2021 and 2024. The short life cycle is linked to Telegram’s relatively strict moderation: while criminals still use bots to automate illicit activities like selling stolen accounts or coordinating DDoS attacks, the service’s design complicates their work. Unlike secret chats, regular chats are not end‑to‑end encrypted by default, and Telegram’s centralized infrastructure prevents offenders from deploying their own servers, making takedowns easier.

According to Kaspersky analyst Vladislav Belousov, using Telegram for crime is increasingly difficult, comparable to running a shop that keeps getting shut down. As a result, major shadow groups are beginning to leave Telegram for decentralized platforms or their own messengers, citing constant blocking and rule enforcement.
