Telegram Sues Australia Over Age-Verification Law

Telegram has filed a lawsuit in Australia against the country’s cyber safety regulator over age-verification requirements. The case follows a prior regulatory fine for what Telegram described as insufficient disclosures about how to police extremist content and content involving minors. Telegram argues it is not a “social media service provider” under Australian law and thus not subject to the regulator’s mandates.

The company also contends that the initial notice was not properly delivered, noting it voluntarily provided responses once aware of the request. Australia is moving toward some of the world’s strictest age-verification rules, with December 2025 deadlines for platforms to block under-16s, under threat of hefty penalties. Privacy advocates warn that robust verification could require biometric data or ID documents.
