To tackle fake news, Telegram channels should be equated to mass media outlets, subjecting them to fines and blocks, stated Andrei Svintsov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma’s Information Policy, IT, and Communications Committee, in an interview with NEWS.ru.

Discussions have long circulated about applying media laws to Telegram channels and large public pages. Svintsov predicts this will happen in 2026, with unregistered, anonymous channels facing gradual blocks by Roskomnadzor, similar to WhatsApp.

Registered channels cooperating with Roskomnadzor must adapt: any errors or inaccuracies in publications would require prompt corrections, retractions, or clarifications to avoid penalties.
