Majority of Russians Oppose WhatsApp and Telegram Call Blocking — Poll

According to a recent survey by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), nearly half (49%) of Russians do not support the partial blocking of voice calls on popular messaging apps WhatsApp and Telegram, introduced by Russian authorities to curb phone scams and terrorism-related activities. 

Only 15% back the restrictions, while 16% remain undecided. Among regular users, 15% described the call blocking as a significant loss, 23% considered it a minor inconvenience, and 26% did not notice any changes. Despite the call restrictions, WhatsApp and Telegram remain the most popular messaging platforms in Russia, used daily by 63% of internet users. Key functions valued by Russians include messaging (62%), calls (37%), and channel/group browsing (31%). 

Meanwhile, 59% of respondents experienced phone scams in the past year, with 14% encountering scams via messengers and social media.
